What is phishing?

Phishing is the practice of tricking someone into handing over their personal information. For example, you may have received some emails or texts that look like they’re from us, but they aren’t. Unfortunately, this happens to a lot of trusted institutions, with fraudsters looking to trick you into giving away sensitive information.

The following advice will help keep you safe.

Be aware of Phishing Scams

We are aware of a phishing scam where an individual receives a scam email or text message from someone claiming to be from the John Lewis Partnership. The message asks candidates if they would like an interview or job and is sometimes asking for money to pay for a CRB check or Visa.

If you receive one of these messages please be aware that it is not from the John Lewis Partnership. Please only respond to emails through the Candidate Communication Centre.

The Partnership will never ask for monies to be paid as part of our recruitment process.

Here’s some important information in helping you to spot malicious phishing emails:

Sender

If you don’t recognise the sender, don’t open the email. Be especially wary of potentially malicious emails in your spam folder.

Urgency

Does the sender want you to act fast to avoid “missing out”? Never be hurried into making an online transaction or sharing confidential information until you know for sure that it’s legitimate.

Spelling

Are there mistakes – in the email address, subject line, email content or website address? This is often a sign that it’s fake.

Links and attachments

Don’t click on links or attachments in unsolicited emails.

Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it very often is. Remember you should only respond to emails through the Candidate Communication Centre.

If you suspect you have received a Phishing email or text please do not respond and report it to NCSC.GOV.UK.

Spotting a Fake Job Advert

Eploy have put together a list of tips and tools to spot a fake job advert. We recommend that all potential applicants familiarise themselves with these.

If you think you may have found or have been a victim of a fake job, please contact SAFERJobs, a non-profit, joint industry and law enforcement organisation.

If you have been a victim of fraud please contact the police via Action Fraud
