Video transcript
My name is Wyndham North and I am a Section Manager at Peter Jones managing the bedroom furniture department. I joined the Partnership in September 2008 as a Graduate Trainee and began my career at Bluewater knowing that I would move here to this branch in March this year. Then I came here straight into a Section Manager role and began to manage the bedroom furniture section.
It’s regarded as one of the best trainers of people in the country and working here, that’s definitely the case. I’ve had fantastic training from the company and a lot of investment put into me which I’m hoping to pay back as I go on in my career.
I gained a Section Manager job within six months of joining and I pushed for that, that’s what I wanted to do, that’s why I joined the business. And the responsibility came very quickly, but I wasn’t unprepared for it. It was still, of course, a bit of a shock when I did come in, and coming straight out of university and managing is not, never easy, because you’re managing people with more experience than you. But here I found a team that’s so supportive of me, with people with so much experience, former section managers within my team, that they’ve made my life so much easier with their support and I find that across, not just in my department, but across the branch and across the business, similar stories where you are welcomed in and supported, you’re not at any point feeling under pressure for being inexperienced. So a lot of responsibility early on, but that’s what I wanted and that’s what excites me.
The business doesn’t limit you in what you can do. I am on a training scheme and so I really enjoy the job that I’m doing now but there’s so many more things that I want to do and it’s satisfying for me to know that I can achieve pretty much anything I want to achieve in this business. It’s so broad and you can go into so many different things, you can go into John Lewis or Waitrose or Johnlewis.com, and within those companies there’s pretty much every job that you can do within a retail environment. So I don’t yet know what I want to do but I’m comfortable knowing that when I do know, I’m sure I can achieve it within this company.
