What do I need for this role?

You don’t need qualifications to join us as a Supermarket Assistant. It’s your flair for retail, your appreciation of quality produce and product knowledge, your interest in a variety of foods and flavours and how one compliments another – whether you have previous job experience or just a genuine passion and enthusiasm for it – that will mean you take pride in whatever you do, carrying out everything to the highest standards. We look for warm, reliable, team players who can contribute lots to our team and provide great customer service. It’ll also help to be flexible, amenable and able to work at pace on multiple tasks.

We look for these traits in our Supermarket Assistants because this position is unique and unlike any other role in the food retail industry. What does this mean for me?

  • We care for your wellbeing both in and out of work, and support you to do what you love in your free time with education subsidies, sports and social clubs, and exclusive Partnership hotels. Find out more about our benefits here.
  • As a democracy, you can make your voice heard on everything from new initiatives to the overall direction of John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners through our Partnership Voice system, voting, and representatives on our elected councils.

Co-ownership is a privilege, but it also carries a responsibility – we work hard, because we want to do well. We want people who appreciate what the Partnership difference means and who are willing to do that extra bit more as a result.

How will you make a difference? As a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll ensure that our checkouts are not simply where our customers pay, but also where they get to enjoy a passing conversation with you. You won’t just stock food, you’ll place it with care. And you’ll share your product knowledge with both your team and customers whenever you can, not because you have to but because you want to.

Bring all this and we’ll give you all the training and development you need to have a bright future with us, with potential pathways into leadership and management careers, or lateral shifts to try out different jobs in other areas of John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners.
