So how does the Graduate Leadership Scheme work?
Year one will be spent in John Lewis and Waitrose branches as well as in an operational role familiarising yourself with our retail operations:
- Stage one – Following induction you’ll be assigned to one of our John Lewis or Waitrose branches for four months where you’ll gain business orientation. You’ll build an in-depth of knowledge of retail, working alongside Partners at all levels. You’ll work on Partnership wide projects collaborating with your Graduate colleagues.
- Stage two – You’ll move branches and become a Section Manager. By leading through others, you will demonstrate an ability to manage teams and achieve results building on the knowledge you gained during your first stage.
- Stage three – You’ll take on an Operational role in either our Supply Chain operation, a Contact Centre, Online or a take on a Senior Manager role in one of our branches.
In your second year, you’ll move into one of our Head Office divisions to gain a breadth of experience, managing complex stakeholders and building capabilities for the future.
In year three you may be part of a project team or be leading a team of Partners as a senior manager in a branch.
Throughout the scheme we’ll also give you the opportunity to appreciate the ‘bigger picture’. This will be facilitated through a variety of learning and development opportunities, as well as exposure to senior business leaders. These opportunities will help you understand what is going on in the external market and look at trends that will inform our future strategy. Of course as time progresses, this is something you’ll do as a matter of course.
What we look for
We’re investing in you as the next generation of business leaders. Our business plays an integral part in shaping our industry and our economy and it’s why we’re looking for the very best. Our leaders are visionaries, great communicators, broad-thinkers, strategic and inspirational; qualities we’ll expect you to have. Above all our leaders are agile and able to utilise their strengths wherever they are needed in the business.
In addition, you’ll also need a strong academic record; a 2:2 in any degree discipline. Please note, you will be required to provide evidence of your qualifications.
In year one you will be based within a 100 mile radius of our Head Office in London Victoria. For your second and third years, we’ll expect you to move around the business whether in a John Lewis shop, a Waitrose Supermarket or in key Head Office roles such as our online teams and Supply Chain divisions.
