Scheme Timeline

Although the training you receive will be flexible and tailored to your individual needs, there is a general structure to the Waitrose Graduate Scheme:

  • Following induction, you'll be assigned to one of our branches to gain an overview of the various systems, procedures and roles at store level. Here you’ll receive technical training that prepares you for the Section Manager role
  • After approximately four months, you'll take up your first management role as a Section Manager
  • After three to four months at this level, you’ll be trained to be a Duty Manager, ready to take personal responsibility for the day-to-day operation of a Waitrose branch
  • You'll then progress to 'acting' Department Manager level, with real accountability and responsibility for the performance of several selling sections, as well as managing the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager
  • Throughout the scheme you’ll have the chance to take on extra projects and decide how long you need in any particular area
  • Formal appointment as Department Manager should take place within 18 months

As a Waitrose Department Manager you’ll take full responsibility for the performance and profitability of a £multi-million turnover operation. But this is just the beginning. As part of our long-term strategy, we are looking for our graduates to progress to Branch Manager within a few years – and the very best can then move on to our most senior roles in the future.
