Scheme Timeline

As with all Apprenticeship schemes, your training will be flexible and tailored to your individual needs. However, there is an overall structure.

Your first week will be an induction in a branch of John Lewis where you’ll learn about the business and programme. You’ll attend a welcome event where you will meet other Apprentices in your cohort so that you can start to build a network of contacts, before heading back to branch where you will learn about delivering a quality retail service that always aims to exceed customers’ expectations.

The rest of the programme is structured in modules which coincide with key business and branch events. You will be involved in key calendar events such as Christmas and Easter where you will learn about the importance of stock management, customer service and how to promote merchandise and enhance sales. After some time you will have opportunities to learn about and visit some of the others sectors which contribute to the smooth operation of the retail supply chain. This will teach you how retail works behind the scenes so that at the end of the programme you will have a comprehensive foundation upon which to build your career.

Throughout the programme you will have regular reviews with your line manager and coach to discuss your progress to date and individual development plan. Each module of your programme includes on the job and off the job training and you will attend face to face and online workshops with the coach, as well as spending some time undertaking self study.

Scheme Timeline

As with all Apprenticeship schemes, your training will be flexible and tailored to your individual needs. However, there is an overall structure.

Your first week will be an induction in a branch of John Lewis or Waitrose where you’ll learn about the business and programme. You’ll attend a welcome event where you will meet other Apprentices in your cohort so that you can start to build a network of contacts, before heading back to branch and spending a few months on an intensive induction, immersing yourself in the role of a branch Partner.

The rest of the programme is structured in modules which coincide with key business and branch events. You will play a key role in the annual Partner appraisal process in your branch and you’ll help plan for key events such as Easter and Christmas where you will focus on important disciplines such as stock management, customer service and resource planning.

After approximately a year you will spend about a month in a different branch, ideally in a different division of our business, so if your first branch is John Lewis you will spend time in a Waitrose store, or vice-versa. While in the new branch you will play a key role in planning for Christmas trade, before returning to your original branch where you will take on line management responsibility.

Throughout the programme you will have regular reviews with your line manager and coach to discuss your progress to date and individual development plan. Each module of your programme includes on the job and off the job training and you will attend face to face and online workshops with the coach, as well as spending some time undertaking self study.

At the end of the scheme you will complete a final assessment and on successful completion will be eligible to apply for Section Manager roles in either John Lewis or Waitrose.
