11 weeks in Agriculture – an inside story..

Our lovely Agriculture Industrial Placement Student Helen Bellew has been having so much fun on her placement that she wanted to let you all know!

Please read below her story so far….

I am now 11 weeks into my Agricultural Placement with Waitrose, it is safe to say the time has flown! I took no longer then a couple of days to become settled into the office and familiarise myself with the amazing team I have the pleasure of working with.

At university I was unsure on where my career was heading so I did not hesitate when given the opportunity to do a placement. I have always been a more practical; ‘outside’ kind of girl so starting an office based job was all new to me. Now its dark by six and the endless days of wind and rain are around the corner I feel quite thankful to be settled in the office and not to be outside chasing sheep round in circles.

I feel very lucky to have a placement which is so varied. It has allowed me to explore areas of the agricultural industry I have previously never had an interest in whilst developing my understanding of familiar sectors. Who knew a sheep farmers daughter would develop a fascination within the fish farming world? Although fish farming may not be viable at home I am yet to suggest to dad that we should sell up the sheep and invest in chickens.

The breadth of knowledge and experience I have gained so far has been unbelievable. No two days are the same with trips out of the office being a regular occasion.  Visits to farms, open days, supply chain meetings, research projects and attending conferences are all part of my everyday job.

In just the first couple months I feel I have already developed as an individual. I have met some amazing individuals who have inspired me to go far in my career and encouraged me to make the most of every second of my placement. My confidence has developed and I have gained a great insight into general business and management skills.

If you have any doubt in whether to apply or not then I have a simple answer…. APPLY! I am sure you will not regret it.

If you have any questions for Helen or the team in general, please leave us a comment below.

Nice to speak to you all as always, until next time.

Faye
